A California jury on Tuesday added roughly $34 million in punitive damages to $5.56 million in compensatory damages awarded to residents of a squalid mobile home park in Long Beach that was held liable for negligence, fraud and elder abuse, attorneys for the residents said.
Last week, the jury returned a first verdict in favor of 31 families from the Friendly Village of Long Beach mobile home park following a two-month trial, holding park owner Friendly Village MHP Associates LP and related entities liable for the terrible condition of the park, attorneys at Kabateck LLP said on Nov. 20. The jury also found that Friendly Village was liable for financial elder abuse and acted with malice, and thus punitive damages are warranted.
