Kabateck LLP Files Suit After Doctor Injured in Santa Monica Crosswalk Crash

Kabateck LLP has filed a lawsuit against the City of Santa Monica and Los Angeles County on behalf of Dr. Brandon Ishaque, a radiologist who sustained devastating injuries after being struck by a vehicle in a marked crosswalk.

The collision occurred on November 8, 2024, at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and 10th Street in Santa Monica. Dr. Ishaque suffered extensive injuries including a fractured leg, hip, and scapula, punctured lungs, a neck artery injury, and a shattered kidney.

Led by Managing Partner Shant Karnikian, the firm alleges that the city received three separate reports that the crosswalk’s warning lights were malfunctioning months before the crash occurred. Karnikian noted that the intersection has a troubling safety record, with more than 20 incidents in recent years resulting in serious injuries and deaths.

“It’s not just the damage that he sustained but it’s also making sure that things like this don’t happen,” Karnikian told CBS LA. “This is the mechanism for bringing about change and making things safer.”

The lawsuit alleges negligence by both Santa Monica and LA County for maintaining the crosswalk in a dangerous condition despite its known safety issues. Wilshire Boulevard is listed as a priority corridor in Santa Monica’s “Vision Zero” initiative, which aims to eliminate fatal and severe injury crashes.
