Kabateck LLP (KBK), representing over 500 Eaton Fire victims, is strongly advising clients to reject Southern California Edison’s newly announced “Wildfire Recovery Compensation Program.”
Partner Anastasia Mazzella Speaks Out
KBK partner Anastasia K. Mazzella, who is also an Altadena resident affected by the fire, has been vocal about the program’s shortcomings in recent media interviews. Her unique perspective as both a legal advocate and fire victim has provided critical insights into Edison’s strategy.
Daily Journal Interview: Mazzella revealed the confusion Edison’s announcement created among clients: “One client thought they were settling the lawsuit. Another client thought SCE would pay money in addition to what they’ll pay in the lawsuit. Most of the clients wanted to know if it will reduce the pot in the lawsuit.” She emphasized that Edison’s announcement “was a shock in one way but not another,” noting she was fielding calls from concerned clients until 10 p.m. that night due to the lack of specifics in Edison’s announcement.
“They’re trying to get people to forgo their day in court. There is no way these programs can pay someone and make them whole when a seasoned wildfire firm like ours privately mediates a case,” Mazzella told the Daily Journal.

Fox 11 Interview: Speaking to the broader community impact, Mazzella characterized Edison’s move as strategic damage control rather than genuine assistance: “This isn’t about Southern California Edison showing compassion. This is about containment. They’re preying on vulnerable fire victims, offering them a quick payday. But what a lot of people don’t realize is the legal consequences of taking it — they’re walking away from the full value of their claim and their day in court.”
Our Firm’s Stance
“It is our advice that you do NOT participate in Edison’s compensation program.”
KBK’s key concerns:
- Victims cannot receive compensation from both the lawsuit and Edison’s program
- The program excludes damages for emotional distress, loss of use, and inconvenience
- These programs typically offer “pennies on the dollar compared to settlements obtained through litigation”
Moving Forward
Kabateck LLP continues to monitor Edison’s compensation program developments and will provide updates to clients as more details emerge. The firm remains committed to pursuing full compensation for fire victims through litigation rather than accepting what it views as inadequate utility-sponsored settlements.
