Altadena and Pasadena residents have filed lawsuits against Los Angeles County and the City of Pasadena for failing to inspect rental homes for toxic contamination following the Eaton Fire. The suits allege violations of Health & Safety Code Section 17970.5, which requires inspection of buildings with potential lead contamination or substandard conditions.
The Eaton Fire destroyed thousands of structures across 14,000 acres and blanketed the area with lead, asbestos, and other contaminants.
Managing Partner Shant A. Karnikian was quoted in the Daily Journal supporting the tenants’ claims: “I think it’s a strong and righteous claim. The county is supposed to be looking out for the conditions of these units. The law requires it.”
Karnikian noted that proper inspections would benefit both tenants and landlords, as they would substantiate insurance claims. Both plaintiff groups are seeking declaratory relief to compel the required inspections.
The firm is currently advocating for victims of the Eaton Canyon Fire, the Maui wildfires, and multiple devastating flood events in Merced, Tulare, and Pajaro.
