SB 1027: Protections against mugshot extortion

Californians no longer face the humiliation of having their mug shot posted on the Internet without permission, then suffer financial blackmail to have it removed. Senate Bill 1027, sponsored by State Senator Jerry Hill was passed and signed into law on August 15, 2014.  It becomes effective on January 1, 2015.  This bill makes it unlawful to publish a mug shot then solicit or accept a fee from the subject of the mug shot to take the picture down.  This is directed at numerous website businesses that have appeared in the last several years which attempt to extort people by posting their mug shots online then charging hundreds of dollars for the “service” of removing that mug shot from their own website.
