Millions of dollars in fines were levied against Unum Provident for not paying valid claims for disability coverage. 60 Minutes exposed the situation in 2002 and the company has spent quite a bit of money trying to regain its reputation.

On January 24, 2003, a California jury awarded a $31.7 million verdict against Unum Provident for a doctor who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and could no longer perform surgery.

In spite of all the fines and verdicts against Unum Provident, they are still routinely denying claims. Disney satirized this practice in The Incredibles, but if you are on the other side of this, you know that it is no laughing matter.
