Accomplishments
In recent years, Richard has achieved an impressive string of appellate victories, including reversals in the following cases:
- Standard Fire Ins. Co. v. Spectrum Community Association (2006; 141 Cal.App.4th 1117)
- Parkview Villas Association, Inc. v. State Farm Fire and Casualty Co. (2005; 133 Cal.App.4th 1197)

In O'Flaherty v. Belgum, Richard successfully convinced the Second District Court of Appeal to reverse a $7.2-million arbitration award in a law firm partnership dispute. The case is often cited for the limits now imposed on an arbitrator's contractual power to indiscriminately award damages.
Richard is often called upon to seek the reversal of improvidently issued arbitration awards. One of his most notable achievements in this area includes the $2-million arbitration award vacated on behalf of E! Entertainment, in an action arising from the construction of its corporate headquarters.
